Marcus graduated from Reading University with an Honours degree in Physics and Electronics then joined the BBC where he worked on a range of news and current affairs programmes. He soon became involved in training others and for ten years ran a busy training department at Television Centre in London.

After leaving the BBC, Marcus taught A Level Media Studies and designed e-learning courses for organisations in the arts, education, finance and health. In 2000 he gained an MA with Distinction in Writing for Children and began running creative writing workshops for children and adults.

In 2006, Marcus joined Southampton Medical School to design a series of Virtual Patients and while there developed and ran a creative writing option for the school’s innovative medical humanities programme. Marcus was made Head of Medical Education in 2015, a post he held until he left four years later to become a freelance copyeditor and proofreader. He also teaches creative writing at Exeter Medical School.
